“I was eager to do well because I was in my ‘home’ stadium and thankfully it was a great night,” said Fiorentina striker Luca Toni, who formed a front three with Alberto Gilardino and Alessandro Del Piero in the absence of broken ankle victim Francesco Totti. The new trident worked superbly in the 4-1 win over Germany, soothing fears that the team might not cope without Totti.

“I get on very well with Gilardino and wend work well together, so the trident attack can work brilliantly if everyone puts in the effort. Nonetheless, Totti is a champion and we all hope he’ll be back for the World Cup,” added Toni, one of the goalscorers. Gilardino, Daniele De Rossi and Del Piero were the others.

Roma midfielder De Rossi took his impressive club form into the game and enthused: “Apart from Roma playing wonderful football at the moment, I also found an Italy side on the kind of form I’d left behind, so it was as if we’d never been away."

With German's Bayern Munich star Michael Ballack said to be close to signing a deal with Inter, De Rossi commented: “Ballack is a great champion and he did good work tonight, but we managed to keep him relatively quiet. Nonetheless, he’s been at the top of this sport for many years and if he does join Inter, then it’ll be a bonus for Serie A.”
